From the hill top is an unexpected and spectacular view of a circular marsh drained in the Middle Ages by the Archbishop of Narbonne and agriculturally portioned like a pie.

The Great Border Fortress at Salses

Salses

Constructed in the late 15th century by the Spanish, the fortress guarded the frontier between Catalonia and France. Its layout and design, revolutionary at the time, provide a rare example of the transition between the medieval fortified château and the solid military fort of later times.
Situated amid marshes and lakes and at the time of its construction the sea coming virtually up to the walls, it seemed a natural frontier at which to build a fortress.
